Mac Tips

Use Text Edit to create a multi-page PDF from JPEGs.

I've always wondered why there wasn't an easier way to create multi-page PDFs from JPEGs or other graphic files in OSX. It seems like Preview would be the tool for the job, but it doesn't work unless the files are already individual PDFs. Here's a quick and dirty alternative to using Acrobat Professional.

Open a new document in Text Edit and simply drag and drop the graphics you want in your PDF to the new doc. Go to "File > Print > PDF > Save as PDF", save the file and there you go. All your images are wrapped up nice and tidy in their own PDF.

Take quick screen captures.

This a technique that I employ many times a day. Sometimes to save web page that I like or sometimes to capture an order receipt that I'm too lazy to print. Use the keys "command+shift+4" to get crosshairs which will allow you to drag a box around the portion of the screen you'd like to capture. After the crosshairs appear, press the spacebar to get a camera icon which will allow you to capture individual windows. Taking a screen capture will result in a PNG file on your desktop. A series of captures will be named sequentially: Picture 1.png, Picture 2.pnc etc.
